Personal growth doesn’t usually happen in grand, sweeping moments. More often, it’s found in the quiet rituals—the small practices we return to, day after day, that shape who we are becoming.
One of the most powerful practices I’ve developed (both as a doctoral student and now as a digital entrepreneur) is pausing at the end of each day to reflect.
Because here’s the truth: life is busy. If we don’t create intentional moments to check in with ourselves, we can drift through weeks, months—even years—without noticing the patterns we’re living in.
End-of-day reflection is a way of saying: I care enough about my growth to stop, breathe, and learn from today before I step into tomorrow.

1. How Did I Interact With Others Today?
Relationships are at the core of so much of our growth. Whether you’re in grad school navigating advisor meetings, or in business connecting with clients, every interaction shapes not only your external journey but your inner one.
I’ll be honest—there are days I didn’t show up as the best version of myself. Stress, deadlines, or exhaustion sometimes meant I was short with people or less present than I wanted to be.
That’s okay. Reflection isn’t about shame—it’s about awareness.
At the end of the day, ask yourself:
- Did I treat others in alignment with the kind of person I want to be?
- Did I set boundaries when I needed to, instead of over-giving or people-pleasing?
- Did I offer kindness, even in small ways, where I could?
Sometimes the answer will be “yes.” Other times it will be “not quite.” Both are powerful teachers.
Reflection prompt: “What interaction today made me feel proud of how I showed up? What interaction would I like to handle differently next time?”
As Maya Angelou said:
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
2. What Am I Grateful For Today?
Gratitude isn’t just a fluffy idea—it’s a scientifically backed practice that rewires your brain for positivity.
Research by Dr. Robert Emmons, one of the world’s leading gratitude researchers, has shown that keeping a daily gratitude journal improves physical health, increases optimism, and strengthens relationships. In his words:
“Gratitude heals, energizes and changes lives. It is the prism through which we view life in terms of gifts, givers, goodness and grace.”
When I was in grad school, gratitude journaling became a lifeline. On days when I doubted whether I belonged in my program, gratitude helped me anchor into small joys: a conversation with a peer who encouraged me, a quiet coffee shop corner where I could write, the relief of finishing one section of a paper.
Now, as an entrepreneur, gratitude reminds me to celebrate progress—no matter how small—instead of only focusing on the next goal.
At the end of each day, ask yourself:
- What went right today?
- Who am I grateful for right now?
- What small joys did I overlook in the moment?
Reflection prompt: “List three things you’re grateful for today, and let yourself feel them fully—not just think them.”
3. Did I Take Care of My Well-Being Today?
This one is the hardest—and the most important.
So many ambitious women (myself included) are wired to push, achieve, and “just get it done.” But here’s the truth: your growth, your degree, your business—they all rely on you. And if you don’t take care of your physical and mental health, everything else eventually crumbles.
That doesn’t mean you need to have a perfect self-care routine every day. Some days, taking care of yourself looks like exercise and meditation. Other days, it’s simply drinking enough water, calling a friend, or giving yourself permission to rest.
When you close your eyes at night, pause and ask:
- Did I show up for my body today (movement, rest, nourishment)?
- Did I check in with my emotions instead of ignoring them?
- Did I honor my energy instead of pushing past my limits?
Reflection prompt: “What’s one thing I did today that supported my mind, body, or heart? What’s one small thing I can try tomorrow?”
As Kerry Washington once said:
“My brain and my heart are really important to me. I don’t know why I wouldn’t seek help to have those things be as healthy as my teeth.”
Why These 3 Questions Matter
These questions—about relationships, gratitude, and wellbeing—are deceptively simple. But they touch the three pillars of sustainable growth: how we connect, how we perceive, and how we care for ourselves.
If you ask them daily, you’ll begin to notice patterns:
- How often you people-please instead of setting boundaries
- How gratitude shifts your mood, even on stressful days
- How your productivity improves when you take care of yourself
And from those patterns, change becomes possible.
